ABSG HOLDS SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY EXCO. MEETING, AS MDAS PRESENT SCORECARDS

Abia State Government has held a Special Anniversary Executive Council (EXCO) meeting with various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Government, presenting scorecards of their offices in line with the mandate of their MDAs and the Governor’s manifesto.

Speaking during the Exco meeting on Monday, May 25th, 202, the Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, thanked God for the milestones achieved within these three years in office, which cut across all sectors, including the health sector, road infrastructure, education, power and public utilities, technology, among others.

The Governor commended the State Exco members for aligning with his administration’s vision in carrying out their assignment in various MDAs and urged them not to rest on their oars, but to ensure that any area the government has not measured up to as expected should be given attention.

In their presentations, the Commissioners in particular highlighted their achievements. The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, highlighted the strides of Governor Otti in the healthcare sector in the last three years.

He appreciated Governor Otti for his special interest and commitment to healthcare delivery in the State, which has seen to the upgrade of medical and health facilities across the State especially the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Abia State Specialist Hospital, the ongoing Upgrade of Amachara General Hospital to a specialist hospital, the ongoing upgrade of the Umunnato General Hospital to a Specialist Hospital, the ongoing reconstruction of 7 General Hospitals across the State, the rehabilitation and functionalization of 3 cottage hospitals across Aba, Umuahia and Nkporo and the retrofitting of PHCs across the 184 electoral wards among other medical interventions.

The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Emeh Uche, while stating that the administration met a shattered and dilapidated tertiary education with non-payment of salaries, accreditation lost in ASCETA, ABSU, and Ogbonnaya Onu, said that a lot has been done in the last three years to reverse the ugly narratives and emphasised that the major achievement of the Ministry of Tertiary Education is infrastructural upgrade in the tertiary institutions.

She further informed the EXCO general in attendance that the first sports fiesta was organised for students of all the tertiary institutions in the State, and appreciated the fact that the relocation of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic to the permanent campus at Osisioma has started, adding that enrollment at the Polytechnic has increased from 3,000 to about 15,000 students.

The Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Oti, in his presentation, highlighted various projects carried out by the government in the last three years, including those done by direct labour and those contracted.

He pointed out some flagship projects of the administration, including the Port Harcourt Road in Aba, Omenuko bridge, the expanded 6-lane Aguiyi Ironsi Bularvaed, among others and appreciated the Governor for providing access and connectivity within the cities and between communities, easing the movement of goods and services. The commissioner for works enumerated and listed 414 roads completed by his ministry, GADA and GODA through direct Labour and contract.

In the area of Lands and Public building, the Commissioner for Lands, Mr Chaka Chukwumerije, noted that digitisation and modernisation of land administration processes have been done to improve service timelines, public sensitisation campaigns, and reforms targeted at transparency and efficiency in land management.

He informed the EXCO that the government has embarked on the recovery of existing layouts, opening up of new layouts, land acquisition, acquisition of Abia Airport land, which is about 1026 hectares of land, Issuance of C of O in 30 days, among others.

For the Ministry of Power and Public Utilities, the Commissioner, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday said that the government has restored power to over 100 communities in Ukwa land, paid off accumulated electricity bills owed by the previous administrations in the MDAs, restored power supply to over 32 MDAs, set up ASERA and gave more licences to power operators to open up the electricity market, among others.

In their contributions, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the Principal Secretary to the Governor and the Chief Strategy Officer of the Government, Mr Chinenye Mba-Uzukwu, among others, appreciated the level of progress achieved so far by the Governor Otti-led administration.

They noted particularly, the administration’s strides in soft infrastructure & Reforms, and said that the various reforms of Governor Otti have changed the narratives in the State, adding that people on their own are testifying to the positive turnaround in the State and said that this is the first time that the State is seeing a Governor that is generally loved by the people.
