OTTI APPROVES RELOCATION OF UMUAHIA ABSU CAMPUS, SETS TO REHABILITATE WATER SCHEMES

Abia State Government has approved the immediate relocation of the Umuahia campus of the Abia State University, Uturu, except the Faculty of Law which will be relocated after its upcoming accreditation exercise.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu disclosed this while briefing the press at Government House Umuahia after this week’s Executive Council meeting.

Prince Kanu noted that the development was part of the reform agenda contained in the white paper report of the institution’s visitation panel. He added that the  Governor has directed the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Eme Uche  to ensure total compliance with the directives.

According to the Information Commissioner,  the USAID sponsored water project aimed at resuscitating moribond regional water schemes  across the state will be flagged-off by the Governor on the 20th of November 2024 with Ariaria and Ubakala water schemes taking the lead.

“The flag off of the USAID sponsored project called “Mercy Corps Intervention Project” to rehabilitate and reconnect homes and public places will happen in Abia State very soon.

“This of course is in line with the state government’s agenda to revive our moribund water schemes across the state and to build new ones to ensure that all Abia homes have functional tap water.” Prince Kanu stated.

He further informed that the “Ten Million Know Your Number, Control Your Number” health programme has been extended to the end of this week. 

“The 10 million “Know You’re number, Control your number initiative that involves the screening for hypertension and diabetes is ongoing across the state and so far, about 33,000 Abians have been screened  and still counting”.

“The date for the exercise has been extended to the end of the week. Initially it was supposed to end on Saturday but because of the Local Government Area elections,  it was moved forward for more Abians to participate in the exercise.

“That exercise is a  very important one  because of the diseases  that are focused  on” Prince Kanu said.

He noted that a total number of 33,000 persons have been screened so far and called on Abians and residents to participate in the free screening exercise in order to know their health status.

Prince Kanu described the just concluded Local Government elections in the state as free and fair leading to the emergence of a Councillorship candidate from a political party that did not participate in the elections.

The state Information boss disclosed that this year’s version of the Aba International Trade fair summit and exhibition would take place between the 28th of November and the 7th of December 2024 at the Aba Mall along the Umuahia -Aba Express Way, Osisioma LGA.

“The event aims to promote trade and commerce in the state. It is also an opportunity that will speak to the government’s readiness to collaborate with the Aba Chamber of Commerce, Mines and Agriculture to develop the economy of the state and to showcase the investment opportunities that abound in the state._

He added that, to underscore the importance of the trade fair, the Governor has drafted the Deputy Governor, Engr Ikechukwu Emetu to supervise the planning of that event while the Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade and Commerce, still  heads  the joint committee organizing the event.

He also announced that the Abia State Government would on Thursday this week hold an Interdenominational Commendation Service in honour of the first democratically elected Governor of Abia State, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia . After the Church Service,his remains would be laid to rest on Friday this week at his Uburu country home in Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi State.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu was flanked by some of his fellow Commissioners, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha.
